We have managed to secure Brogborough Lake in Bedfordshire as our club Open Water Swimming venue for the 2014 season. The venue is just the other side of junction 13 of the M1. The entrance is a little off the beaten track so please use the postcode MK43 0SL to help you find it, and when you get to the point when you think “this can’t possibly be right!!”, keep going and the entrance is on your left.
The coaching team plan to put on a series of 4 coached sessions throughout the season, catering for both beginners and intermediates.
We will also be hosting a “try before you buy” day at the lake, which will allow new open water swimmers to try the venue and the experience under the watchful eye of some more experienced swimmers/coaches. The idea is to buddy up each newbie with an experienced open water swimmer and have a coached session to introduce you to open water swimming. Again date TBC.
The structure of the season will be to have a weekday and Saturday as “club days” when the club swims together. However anyone that does sign up to swim at Broggie will be given a key code for the gate and can swim at any time that suits your schedule. We will have access to the water on any day that we like, with the following restrictions:
You are not permitted to swim alone at any point. There are other tri clubs using the lake during the season so there should always be someone to jump in with, but please do not ever swim alone.
All members must wear a brightly coloured swim hat, swim in a line down the middle of the lake (to the flag, and then to the kettle) and avoid swimming close to the edge, or near the fishermen. If you are in doubt about this please ask.
All members swim at their own risk, the lake is not lifeguarded.
We need to be out of the lake by 9:00am. The lake is primarily a windsurfing lake and 9:00 is when they take over.
The cost for each person for the season is £50, which will include all the coaching sessions that the club will run over the course of the season. Anyone wishing to take part should contact Jim. Likewise if you are a new swimmer and would like to do the coached “try before you buy” session again please let him know. He will also need experienced swimmers to buddy up with the new guys, so if you are willing to get in and help with that, please also get in touch.
