FAQ

If you can’t find the answer to your question below – email secretary@lbtri.org.uk

I would like to come to a training session  – where do I go?

We meet from 7.30pm onwards on Thursday evenings in the foyer of Tiddenfoot Leisure Centre if it’s cold and dark but just outside if the weather is good.  If you are new, a member of the committee (usually Diane, the Club Secretary) will greet you and give you a form to complete so that we know who you are and whether you have any medical conditions or injuries we need to know about.

Don’t be shy, just turn up!

You can also register your details on the website – see the register tab on the left.  You will then be able to access all areas of the club website and will receive emails from the club.

Do I need to join the club immediately?

No, we encourage you to come along for four weeks with no obligation to see if you like what we do.  If it’s for you, then we ask that you show your commitment by becoming a member.

What time does Thursday training start?

Running starts at promptly at 7.45 pm.  Swimming training starts at 9.00 pm.  We hire 4 lanes at the swimming pool on a regular basis, depending upon numbers who turn up.

Where do you run?

We have a rotating programme for each group of runners.  Weekly sessions are posted on the website so you know where you will be going.

What about cycling?

We have regular cycle sessions on Sunday mornings starting 8-9.00 am from Tiddenfoot – but we ask that you become a member in order to join these.  Make sure you keep an eye on the website in case of adverse weather.

Is there a charge for training sessions?

There is no charge for running or cycling (unless otherwise notified).  However, we do charge £3 per session for swim training on Thursdays.

I’ve been given a Free Swim Session Voucher – what do I do with it?

Your first swim session with the club is free (even if you don’t have a voucher).  Just come along at 9.00 pm on a Thursday to Tiddenfoot to see if you like it – you don’t need to be the best swimmer in the world to have a go.  After your initial freebie, our swim sessions cost £3 per session or £30 for 12 – see below

Why do we have to pay £3 for swim training?

The club has to hire the swimming lanes from Tiddenfoot swimming pool.  You can purchase swim vouchers at a discounted price of £30 for 12 with cash, bank transfer or cheque from Karen, our Treasurer; or from EntryCentral where you can pay by card – click on the link below to go directly to our voucher scheme – but please note the card charge is now added.  The vouchers do not have an expiry date so if you are unable to come swimming for any reason you won’t lose out.

I am a member of Tiddenfoot – do I have to pay for swimming?

Yes, unfortunately, you do.  A lot of our triathletes are also members at Tiddenfoot but we have to pay extra for the hire of the swimming lanes on Thursday evenings.

I am a slow runner and I haven’t trained before – will I be able to keep up?

We are mindful that everyone’s ability is different.  Whilst we have some super fast triathletes, there are others who just enjoy the training sessions to bring out the best in themselves and become fitter, rather than beating everyone else.  This is why we have split everyone into different groups of abilities.  We have four run groups, so that the faster, more confident athletes train together, those who are neither fast nor slow go in the middle groups and then the slower runners are in the final group to go at their own pace and not feel inadequate – nobody gets left behind!   You will be assessed by our coaches and put in the running group or in the swim lane best suited to your ability.  The beauty of triathlon is that you don’t have to be good at all three disciplines  –  it’s a fully inclusive sport which is fun for everyone, whatever your ability.

I am a seasoned triathlete and train regularly – why should I join the club?

Our coaches are BTF trained and will be able to bring out your full potential by assessing your style and technique in each discipline and advising you on your training to suit.  Besides which, it’s much more fun to train with, and race with, other, local triathletes.

I am a Student and am finding it difficult to afford club fees

We charge full time students £13 per annum.  Please see a committee member prior to applying for membership because you are a special case!

Why do I need to bring plenty to drink to training?

If you are not fully hydrated and have been sweating during the run session, you may find that you get cramp when you are swimming.  You can help avoid this by making sure you drink plenty of fluids; preferably isotonic, energy type drinks.
